President Prabowo Subianto condemned corrupt practices in Indonesia’s rice trade during the 27th anniversary of the National Awakening Party (PKB). He expressed his determination to combat companies that repackage and overprice subsidized rice, estimating that these actions cost the country up to Rp100 trillion annually. Prabowo highlighted the subsidies that support rice production, from seeds to farming equipment fuel, and emphasized how companies exploit these subsidies by selling repackaged rice as “premium” at much higher prices. He identified 212 rice milling companies engaged in such practices and demanded that they return illicit profits. Prabowo characterized this behavior as criminal, violating the Constitution and robbing the people of significant funds that could have been invested in public services. He instructed the National Police Chief and the Attorney General to investigate and take action against these companies, emphasizing that his stance is based on the constitutional mandate to control sectors crucial to the nation’s welfare. The President’s firm stance reflects a commitment to combating corruption and ensuring fairness in the rice trade to benefit the Indonesian people.
