The Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program has been found to have a positive impact on children’s concentration levels, as indicated by short-term memory tests. This improvement is believed to contribute to enhancing students’ motivation to learn consistently.
Recent research in Aceh revealed that students who received Free Nutritious Meals showed increased concentration levels. This is promising as it can lead to better academic performance and strengthen students’ desire to continue their education. Ikeu Tanziha, an Expert Council Member of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), shared these findings in Jakarta on Monday.
Another study conducted by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) showed similar results. The MBG program improved students’ ability to focus and enhanced their cognitive performance in areas like Bogor and Papua, especially for those who skipped breakfast. A case study at State Vocational School 6 (SMK Negeri 6) in Medan demonstrated that MBG significantly increased attendance rates and concentration in the classroom.
Ikeu highlighted the connection between concentration, attention, and stimulus processing in the human brain. Concentration is a vital cognitive function that plays a crucial role in a child’s brain development during their early years. Factors such as learning motivation, nutritional intake, psychological well-being, and physiological conditions like sleep quality and learning environment design can influence a child’s ability to concentrate.
Nutrition also plays a significant role in concentration, with key nutrients like protein, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids essential for brain development and cognitive function, particularly memory retention. Ikeu emphasized the importance of nutritional intake in brain development and memory function.
The MBG Program is specifically designed to address children’s nutritional requirements for physical growth, cognitive potential, and intelligence enhancement. Despite facing challenges such as unhealthy eating habits among children and limited access to nutritious food in some areas, Ikeu stressed the need for collective efforts to support the successful implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals Program. It is believed that this initiative will bring long-term benefits for future generations and society as a whole.
